semana clásica de puerto sherry 2016
The III Semana Clásica is an event that for the third year has turned the marina of Puerto Sherry upside down, the best in Europe according to many sailors accustomed to stopping their boats in the most remote ports, exclusive or not. The regatta has managed to go beyond the sporting barrier to become a social, tourist and economic event of enormous value for the place where it is held and the surrounding area.
The Swiss Mariska has won the title it came to the Bay of Cadiz for a few weeks ago, emerging victorious from the duel with the other three boats in the 15M International class. The visitors share honours with Valle de La Riva's Giraldilla, winner of the Spirit of Tradition class, after a final day in which competition and spectacle went hand in hand in Cadiz waters.
Christian Neils' boat, with Benjamin Redreau at the helm, thus revalidates the title won a couple of years ago in this same venue and becomes the provisional leader of the particular journey of the Lords of the Sea, seconded by the British The Lady Anne, the Spanish Hispania and the Monegasque Tuiga, in that order in the final classification of the III Puerto Sherry Classic Week.
The victory in the last race also allows the Giraldilla of Valle de la Riva to renew its title in the Spirit of Tradition class, in which it wins over the Portuguese Sea Lion of Manuel Champalimaud and Albacore of Luis Figueiredo, second and fourth in the last race and escorts of the president of Puerto Sherry on the final podium. In fourth place is the RCMT Punta Umbría boat, Centinela IV of Manuel Galnares, followed by Mariana of Pedro Gonzalo in fifth place.
As he did on the first day, the wind was once again allied with the fleet in the farewell, blowing to the measure of the 15 M and the Espiritu Tradicion boats. The latter repeated the 14-mile coastal course from Cabezuela to Galera, while their bigger brothers sailed the last two windward/leeward legs of four miles each.
Among the majestic 15 M, in the British The Lady Anne got rid of the bad taste in their mouths of the opening day by winning the first race of the day -third of the championship- over the Monegasque Tuiga and the host Hispania, with the Swiss Mariska closing the line. The race started with the dominance of Hispania at the helm of the tandem formed by José Rábade and Axel Roger, followed by Tuiga and The Lad and Anne at the first windward mark, positions that both exchanged at the next regulatory passage, always behind Hispania. The British team's comeback had only just begun, taking first place on the next leg, with Tuiga behind and both in their hand to hand superior to Hispania, who lost positions to take third place ahead of the Swiss Mariska.
In the second race, Hispania and Mariska made a first pass around the buoy practically at the same time, giving one of the most spectacular images of the day, seconded by The Lady Anne, with Tuiga in fourth place. On the next leeward passage, Mariska took the lead from Hispania, who then still held second place, which they lost on the windward leg to the British. The race ended with the victory of the Swiss, followed by The Lady Anne, Hispania and Tuiga.
After the regatta, the participants were entertained one more day by the organization with a seafood lunch that gave way to the awards ceremony chaired by Valle de la Riva and Enrique Lopez Bosch, president and CEO of Puerto Sherry, respectively, in the Village of the regatta that will remain open to the public until Sunday.
With the III Puerto Sherry Classic Week now concluded, the marina is preparing to welcome participants for its next edition in 2018.
