Odiseus’ and the 15M ‘The Lady Anne’, second and third, and leaders of the Spanish Cup in their classes
The classic fleet shines in the premiere over a 14-mile course between buoys in the Bay of Cádiz
El Puerto de Santa María, 27th June 2024 – The seventh edition of the Semana Clásica de Puerto Sherry kicked off this Thursday in the waters of the Bay of Cadiz with a race on schedule, and it did so on a bright day marked by winds of 10 knots of average intensity. Perfect conditions for the debut of the Spanish Cup for the Classic and Vintage boats, which have been able to show off along a carousel of 14 miles between buoys. As expected, the majestic British 15M ‘The Lady Anne’ has been the standard bearer during the race, leaving an impressive picture at the front of a compact and very competitive fleet that does not seem willing to give anything away.
The crews competing these days in Cadiz waters combine veteran and youth, with the presence of renowned and prestigious sailors such as Javier Vallejo, Víctor Unzueta, Dioni Martínez, José Luis Domecq, Antonio Piris, Daniel Cuevas, Sergio Llorca, Luis Galnares, Wito Ferraro, Ángel Ruiz, Gonzalo Ralston or Petete Rubio, among others, from whom the young sailors take the opportunity to learn from the best and get to know a way of sailing where, apart from strategy, a lot of effort is required.
The first leader of the Spanish Cup is Segundo de Pablos’ ‘Seventy Senda Azul’, from the Malaga club Estrella del Sur, a boat that due to its smaller length has seen almost ten boats pass in real time, which it has then taken the necessary time to win after the compensation. It was followed by José María Chávarri’s ‘Odiseus’ representing Vistahermosa Club de Golf, a boat that gained one place with the time correction, and Jaime Botín’s 15M ‘The Lady Anne’, second and third, respectively.
The first marks gave fourth place to Javier Moreno’s ‘Tira Neruda’ sailing for the CN de León, followed by Sergio Llorca’s ‘Jaque Mate’ (CN Puerto Sherry), the second boat to cross the finish line; Manuel Galnares’ ‘Centinela IV’ from Huelva, based at the RCMT Punta Umbría, Ricardo Contreras’ ‘Disparate’, Mariangeles Pérez’s ‘Salina Tres’ with grimpola from the RCN Cádiz, Javier Gonzalo’s ‘Guadalmina’ (RCMT Punta Umbría), and closing the first group of ten boats, Eric Perignat’s ‘Buzz Lightyear’ from the neighbouring RCN El Puerto de Santa María.
By divisions, ‘Seventy Senda Azul’ is the first Classic, while ‘Odiseus’ and ‘The Lady Anne’ lead in the Espíritu de Tradición y Época categories, respectively, all with the Spanish Cup at stake.
Among the ‘Mini’ class boats (7 metres in length) the first to cross the finish line was Antonio Aliada’s ‘Infiel’ based at the CN Puerto Sherry, beaten after corrected times by Nicholas Lock’s ‘Madcap’ flying the Spanish flag. Third place in this three-way duel today goes to Javier Betancourt’s ‘Paradise’, also representing the host club.
Tomorrow, Friday, will be a decisive day, as the second of the three races that will complete the Semana Clásica should serve to secure positions for the outcome. The start time has been brought forward to 13:00 with a forecast of showers and medium winds.
